All about that pace

Authors
American. JP is the most prolific and highest earning novelist ever, while Bubba was POTUS back in the 90s, when the world was a simpler place, even if we didn’t think so at the time. (See footnote) This is their third fictional collaboration. All are based around Presidents from the Democratic party, surprise, surprise.

In brief
The female Prez and her male COS (chief of staff) are trying to get bipartisan support (no chance of that nowadays) for ground breaking social contract-type legislation that will be her legacy. They and her titular hubby were all at Dartmouth together back in the day. Hubby was a hot-shot tight end. (Tay-Tay’s romance with Travis means fictional American footballers don’t all have to be quarterbacks any more.) A knee injury limited his NFL career to three seasons, which means still he has most of his marbles. He needs them when the remains of a cheerleader who disappeared 17 years ago turn up and he’s charged with murder. Investigative reporters are on the case. Mysterious forces are at work behind the scenes. More people get dead. There’s a trial, a mob connection, everything but the kitchen sink basically, yada, yada, the end.

Writing
JP proves, yet again, that if you maintain a brisk enough narrative pace, plot holes, dodgy courtroom scenes, and character development don’t matter. Bubba chipped in with the Presidential stuff, I presume, but they’re both old white men. What possessed them to think they could make a young black female protagonist work? Spoiler alert: They don’t. Not even close.

Footnote
IMO, things would be a whole lot better if Martin Sheen were still Prez. (Gen Z readers should ask ChatGPT about that reference.)
