Mim’s husband is missing. No one knows where Ben is, but everyone wants to find him – especially the Department. And they should know, the all-seeing government body has fitted the entire population with a universal tracking chip to keep them ‘safe’.
But suddenly Ben can’t be tracked. And Mim is questioned, made to surrender her passport and threatened with the unthinkable – her two children being taken into care at the notorious BestLife.
From the stark backroads of the Australian outback to a terrifying sea voyage, Mim is forced to shuck off who she was – mother, daughter, wife, sister – and become the woman she needs to be to save her family and herself.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The simple premise of a missing husband kicks off Kate Mildenhall’s smart dystopian thriller. Set in a near-future Australia, it follows wife and mother Mim as she collides with an imperious governing force called The Department. Drawing on classic Orwellian themes of surveillance and paranoia, Mildenhall also incorporates pressing modern concerns like climate change and asylum seekers without losing any of the novel’s white-knuckle momentum. The Mother Fault depicts an intense fight for family survival that isn’t just suspenseful, but frighteningly plausible too. Anyone looking for the next The Handmaids Tale should start right here.

Good
I was really enjoying this book and found it exciting however I was a bit disappointed with the ending. Maybe it’s been left open for more. Would make a good movie
Please bring to our TV screens
I loved this ripper of a story.
Set in the near future, moving the action from suburban Melbourne to the Timor Sea, this story twists and turns with pace and zing.
This would make an excellent Australian film. I can see it in my mind already with Abbie Cornish as Mim and Aaron Pedersen as Nick.
Exceeded expectations
One of those rare books you wish was twice as long. More Mim, please!
