When David Child, a major client of a corrupt New York law firm, is arrested for murder, the FBI ask con artist-turned-lawyer Eddie Flynn to secure the case and force him to testify against the firm.
Eddie is not someone who is easily coerced, but when the FBI reveal that they have incriminating files on his wife, he knows he has no choice.
But Eddie is convinced the man is innocent, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. With the FBI putting pressure on him to secure the deal, Eddie must find a way to prove his client's innocence.
But the stakes are high - his wife is in danger. And not just from the FBI . . .

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
The Feds make Manhattan con-artist turned-attorney Eddie Flynn, the hardboiled hero of Cavanagh's criminally entertaining sequel to 2016's The Defense, an offer he can't refuse: unless Eddie hustles just-arrested young tech billionaire David Child (who isn't even his client yet) into pleading guilty to murdering his girlfriend as part of their plan to flip him against the respected but corrupt firm currently representing him, they will arrest Eddie's estranged wife, Christine White, a lawyer there, for participating (unwittingly) in a vast money-laundering conspiracy. Eddie quickly hits a huge problem: despite the superficially slam-dunk evidence against David, he's not convinced the terrified 22-year-old did it. Especially after a hit attempt nearly takes out the techie while he's still in a holding cell. From there the action turns fast and furious as, with the preliminary hearing and Feds' deadline looming, Eddie employs his very particular set of skills to try to keep David, Christine, and himself alive long enough to figure out who the real killer is and how he's going to prove it. This is perfect for anyone who likes a locked-room mystery wrapped inside a legal thriller on steroids.
Customer Reviews
More than he bargained for
Author
Irish civil rights lawyer. Second novel, sequel to 'The Defence,' published the same year.
Setting
Present day NYC
Protagonist
Eddie Flynn is a conman turned criminal defence attorney - hardly a tectonic shift - as well as a reformed alcoholic separated from his corporate lawyer wife. He wants to put the band back together with her and his kid.
Plot
We meet Eddie staring down the barrel of a gun, literally, then rewind through the preceding 48 hours to understand why. This involves a framed billionaire computer nerd, money laundering by Eddie's wife's dodgy law firm, an even dodgier CIA agent, the list goes on. Eddie's secret weapons are street smarts, a sympathetic FBI agent who hates the CIA guy's guts, and a gaggle of delightfully dodgy characters from his previous life, for instance "The Lizard," who only ever refers to himself in the third person. Fortunately, the dude can shoot.
Bottom line
Ho-hum, you're probably muttering, another John Grisham wannabe. However, the relentless pace, solid prose, crisp dialogue, and a better ending than many of Mr G's make this a very good holiday read.
Red hot intensity
The intense adrenaline never stops in this fast paced story. The twists and turns just keep coming. Once again the protagonist, Eddie Flynn, is brilliant. The court dramas are just wonderful. Great character developments. However, I’m not sure just how Eddie Flynn remains alive. Great reading. (Note to self - read on Kindle.)
