Publisher Description

The latest stunning thriller from the bestselling author of Scrublands and The Tilt.

Yuwonderie's seven founding families have lorded it over their district for a century, growing ever more rich and powerful.

But now—in startling circumstances—one of their own is found dead in a ditch and homicide detectives Ivan Lucic and Nell Buchanan are sent to investigate.

Could the murder be connected to the execution of the victim's friend thirty years ago—another member of The Seven—or even to the long-forgotten story of a servant girl on the brink of the Great War?

What are the secrets The Seven are so desperate to keep hidden?

With the killer still on the loose and events spiralling out of control, the closer Ivan and Nell get to discovering the truth, the more dangerous their investigation becomes. Can they crack the case before more people die?

The Seven is a compelling thriller filled with intrigue, emotional depth and an evocative sense of place—where nothing is ever quite what it seems. Chris Hammer, the acclaimed and bestselling author of the international bestsellers Scrublands, Treasure & Dirt and The Tilt, can take his place among the world's finest crime writers.

A slow but satisfying burn

Oh I love these books. A slow burn that sets up a most satisfying ending at breakneck speed.
This book is set in a small town near the Murrumbidgee River. Yuwonderie is ruled by the seven families who founded a water irrigation system and settled a town in the middle of nowhere at the mercy of the Australian outback with its droughts, heat, and floods. Hammer has a knack of portraying outback Australia in a most authentic manner.
Ivan Lucic and Nell Buchanan are back, as too in the very end, Martin Scarsden the reporter and author who has appeared in several of Hammer’s other books. It has themes of violence, secrecy, mafia, murder and arson running through the book. These themes add to the descriptive nature of the story. The map, is such a help to a visual person such as myself and I always take time to study it and refer to it often whilst reading.
There are several storyline’s running through an investigation by Ivan and Nell, of Athol Hasluk, local accountant of Yuwonderie, when his body is found dead and tortured in one of the local canals running through the town, bordering on one of the seven’s property. Sometimes I find it distracting when the author uses this literary ploy but in this case it added to the intrigue and storyline.

The Seven

An intricately woven tale with a most unexpected ending. A real page-turner, absorbing and entertaining, and commentary on country lives, historical and contemporary issues. Apparent red herrings become central issues and vice versa, adding to the intricacies of the plot. All loose ends are tied up, often unexpectedly, but always satisfactorily .
