Inspired by a real-life mystery about vanished lighthouse keepers on a small Scottish isle, Melbourne author Laura McCluskey’s debut novel takes place on a fictionalised version of the island called Eilean Eadar. With a violent storm keeping everyone stuck there for nearly a week, it’s the perfect setting for a locked-room mystery. McCluskey brings literary finesse to her sharply drawn tale of desperation and deception, which sees a pair of visiting DIs try to solve an apparent suicide while the locals refuse to offer much assistance. Dripping with eerie suspense, The Wolf Tree adds gothic and noir undertones to the traditional procedural approach. Solid read, atmospheric & eerie. Solid debut where the church dominates the lives on this fictional Outer Hebrides Island. Fans of Peter May should give this a try.
