If, like Kane, you're a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again - by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide - and when to shoot.
But some places don't play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane's experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan meet are such a place - a place where violence is the only way to survive.
Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West - but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart...

Unusual
I loved most of this book. It was gripping and well written. The post apoplectic world, alien dna and time travel I didn’t expect, it felt unnecessary and clunky. Glad I kept reading though.
A much waited read
I think I’ll give this book a 3 1/2 stars because like many other readers I felt that the first 70%was typically Terry Hayes, fast passed edge of the seat stuff and then it turned weird to say the least and leapt forward into time and then the backward which was too much for me to swallow. I don’t mind a bit of science fiction but this was a thriller and the two genres have a bit of trouble meshing together.
It was also another very long book which if I am to be honest could have had the science fiction section pulled out and then jumped to the end which would have been an excellent ending.
Still this wouldn’t put me off reading another Terry Hayes book in the future. The characters were well developed and believable and the settings researched and edgy.
