WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
A near-future Australia.
The death penalty is back. But if the victim’s family wants the perpetrator to die, they have to do it themselves. Twenty-four hours alone in a room with the condemned. No cameras. No microphones. Just whatever punishment they decide befits the crime.
Ten-year-old Lucy was murdered.
Through counselling sessions with their court-appointed psychologist, we learn the stories of her family members: Lucy’s two mothers – Stella and Matisse – her much older brother and her bookish teenage sister, who is too young to participate in the execution, but who has plans of her own . . .
Secrets and grief threaten to break the family.
As the execution date nears, already-struggling Stella remains adamant that she must carry out the punishment. But it becomes clear that if she steps into that room, the family may lose her too.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Georgia Harper's debut novel, What I Would Do to You, delves into the darkest recesses of human nature through the story of two mothers, Matisse and Stella, as they muddle their way through life following the murder of their daughter. It's set in the near future in Queensland, where the families of murder victims are permitted to punish and even kill the killer. As Matisse and Stella's day of justice nears and secrets are revealed, they're forced to reckon with their differing approaches to grief and revenge. Through the eyes of Octavia, a court-appointed psychologist, and Hannah, the victim's sister, Harper examines the impact of violence and concepts of retribution and accountability. With a vivid and evocative style, Harper leverages her background as a psychologist to weave together a narrative that is as provocative as it is enlightening.

Disappointing ending
Loved the concept characters and story line just thought the ending was a bit abrupt and not completely tied up

Read in one sitting … a disturbingly good read
