Charming, hilarious, and emotional...When Sparks Fly is Helena Hunting at her very best!
Avery Spark is living her best life. Between her friends, her sisters, and Spark House, the event hotel her family owns, she doesn’t have much time for anything else, especially relationships. She’d rather hang out with her best friend and roommate, Declan McCormick, than deal with the dating scene. But everything changes when she is in a car accident and needs someone to care for her as she heals.
Declan avoids relationships, giving him a playboy reputation that he lives up to when he puts a one-night stand ahead of a promise he made to Avery. While he may not have been the one driving the car, he feels responsible for Avery’s injuries and is determined to make it up to her by stepping into the role of caretaker.
Little did they know that the more time they spend in compromising positions, the attraction they’ve been refusing to acknowledge becomes impossible to ignore. When they finally give in to the spark between them, neither is prepared for the consequences. Their love is fragile and all it will take is a blow from the past to shatter it all.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Hunting (A Kiss for a Kiss) delivers an enjoyable friends-to-lovers romance ignited by a lengthy recovery from a car accident. Twenty-eight-year-old hotelier Avery Spark is on her way to a business meeting when she crashes her car and breaks multiple bones. Declan McCormick, her roommate and best friend since college, offers to provide round-the-clock care during her recovery out of guilt for not driving her to the meeting as he'd promised. Avery is frustrated with her lack of mobility, but, with the encouragement of her sisters, finds an outlet in documenting her recovery on social media. And after Declan walks in on Avery masturbating, the pair decide he should help her relieve her sexual tension while her mobility is limited, leading both to admit to long-hidden mutual attraction. When pot brownies inspire an out-of-character rant from Avery that she posts on her hotel's social media, the loss of a major sponsor threatens the business. In her attempts to fix her mistake, Avery pursues an alternate sponsor—with serious consequences for her fragile relationship. Hunting hits familiar notes but makes them sing, resulting in a predictable but charming love story. This is a solid pick for romance fans.
Customer Reviews
Friends to Lovers Romance.
4.5🌟
This story is what I would call a realistic romance because it felt very real and authentic like it could actually happen to someone I know. Hunting’s writing has developed with diversity in that we all know she can write a fabulous romcom, plus now I feel she can deliver a great contemporary romance with wit and emotion that takes me on a journey and has me falling for the main characters.
Avery and Declan met in college, and even though both had an attraction for the other, nothing was said between them as the timing wasn’t right. They were extremely compatible with similar interests in sports, crosswords and movies which bought about them being best friends and then roommates after graduating. Avery’s worst nightmare happens when she has a car accident and is immobile for weeks and Declan is compelled to be there for her 24/7.
Relationships are about give and take, and unfortunately Declan didn’t have any good role models with his parents. To him, once love enters the equation, couples use that advantage to seek revenge and hurt. Avery though knew what a good relationship could be like even though her parents had past years before. When these two spend more and more time together, they understand the attraction isn’t just lust. Avery needs help to do the simplest of things, and Declan always puts her first, so when she has an itch that desperately needs scratching, he’s only too happy to lend a hand.
I loved this couple. I loved their dynamic and how they processed things. I got why Declan was upset and lost it. I also felt for Avery being on the receiving end of his hurt. I appreciated the effort they took to heal and revisit what could be an amazing life together. It may have taken some time but Declan always knew that Avery was his best friend, his soulmate, his everything. The epilogue was super sweet, and something I would have enjoyed doing myself. This is a standalone novel, but who knows, we could be heading back to Sparks House as Avery has two sisters that deserve their own happy ending too.
When sparks fly
First book in a series of three (I think) and we follow Avery and Declan who are best friends who live together. After a car accident, Declan pretty much becomes Avery’s full time carer as she recovers.
There is some past trauma and relationship baggage for these two to get over and can I just say how much I love a guy who can recognise he has some issues that need professional help and goes and gets that help all on his own! Yes to taking responsibility for your own mental health and not expecting your partner to “fix you”.
Cute little easy read. CN for grief, death of parents
Dual POV, med spice, 18+
Ticked all my boxes
Avery and Declan’s story was everything I expected and so much more, I was intrigued by the blurb for When Sparks Fly and I wasn’t disappointed. Once again the very talented Helena Hunting has given us characters to not only love but to also connect with on a very real level. This is a friends to lovers romance set in Colorado Springs and by the end of this book I felt like I had made friends and visited the town. When Avery is injured in a car accident it’s Declan that offers to nurse his best friend back to health but it’s only after nearly losing her that has him realising just how much she means to him. From the moment Avery leaves the hospital the fun begins and things start to heat up but will a relationship get in the way of her recovery….. This book ticked all my boxes, I loved all the characters, the chemistry is scorching hot, the banter is witty but it was the relationship Avery had with her sisters that gave this story additional depth. The hero is swoon worthy and the heroine is sassy and once you add in some heartwarming moments and some entertainment with some pot brownies you get the perfect read. Wonderful, captivating read that should be on everyone’s TBR list.
