Publisher Description

The story takes place in the Blackwood Valley Archaeological Park and Open-Air Museum, where Hazel Quinn, a sixty-four-year-old retired professor of archaeobotany, continues to assist with excavations and research. The valley, once a forgotten and marshy pasture, has become a reconstructed Iron Age village and visitor centre. For Hazel, it is not merely a workplace, but one of the great achievements of her life.
Yet the seemingly peaceful world of the park is poisoned by internal tensions. Victoria Vance, the marketing director, wants spectacle, press attention, and tourist-friendly sensation, while Hazel and the young Chloe Bennet defend the values of careful, authentic research. Dr. Arthur Pendelton, the lead archaeologist, grows increasingly nervous as he struggles between academic standards and Victoria’s pressure. Marcus Brody, the caretaker, fears that modernization will erase his father’s legacy. Julian Cross, the influential sponsor, is determined to protect his own business interests.
The tension reaches its peak when Arthur presents what appears to be an extraordinary Iron Age vessel. The object seems too perfect, and Hazel soon notices the impossible: a modern red lipstick mark on its rim. Victoria treats the incident not as a scandal, but as a promotional opportunity. The next morning, however, she is found dead inside the Celtic longhouse.
At first, the police investigation points toward Chloe, whose earring is discovered near the body. Hazel refuses to trust evidence that appears too convenient. Drawing on her own scientific expertise, she begins to examine the details: the residue left in a teacup, the plant fragments under the microscope, the poisonous leaves of the yew tree, the falsified archaeological layers, and the small human reactions that reveal more than any official statement.
As Hazel digs deeper, it becomes clear that Victoria’s death was not the result of a simple outburst of anger. The history of the park, professional vanity, financial interests, personal grievances, and archaeological fraud slowly begin to intertwine. The question is no longer only who killed Victoria, but who was willing to falsify the past in order to save — or claim — the present.
