The Daemon of the World

Percy Bysshe Shelley's visionary fragment begins in a moonlit chamber, where the sleeping Ianthe becomes the center of a supernatural visitation and death, sleep, and beauty blur into one another. As the Daemon of the World descends in a radiant chariot, her spirit is awakened and carried into a vast celestial journey that reveals the universe as a living temple of sublime power, infinite motion, and hidden truth. Yet amid the stars and silent worlds, the vision also exposes the violence, greed, kingship, and false submission that darken human history. From an eternal temple suspended in the cosmos, the poem turns toward a final, radiant hope: a renewed Earth where suffering, disease, crime, ignorance, and tyranny have vanished. Frozen poles, barren deserts, and wild seas are transformed into fertile realms of peace, while humanity is reborn in health, equality, science, and moral clarity. Death itself becomes a calm transition in a perfected world, and the fragment closes by urging courage, compassion, and steadfast virtue as the soul returns to life and Ianthe awakens beside Henry beneath the stars.
