Trepidations Over Reading a Series?
I just finished the 5th book in this series (this is book 1) and I thoroughly enjoyed them. It was well worth reading and I will probably revisit it again as I have the Ender, Shadow, and Empire books.
Not only do they spin a good tale, with an astonishing breadth of scope, but the characters are well developed and believable. That is one of Card's strengths, creating characters that are complex, and can react and change in ways that feel right, even if often surprising.
An interesting technique of Card's is to move the story along by jumping from one character's perspective to another. It is particularly interesting when the character rationalizes his or her choices and as an outside viewer we can see the greater truth and how weft of the characters helps create the pattern through the warp of the plot. He uses dramatic irony not to amuse or demonstrate cleverness, but to better tell the story.
Go ahead, purchase this novel, it is worth reading on its own. But if you enjoy the style and the tale, continue on through Earth born. It is well worth the journey.
