APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Sometimes knowing the truth is worse than staying in the dark. Best-selling thriller writer Mary Kubica (The Good Girl) draws us into a horrifying mystery about small-town secrets. Sadie Foust and her husband, Will, have seen more than their fair share of dysfunction, so when Will’s sister dies, leaving the Fousts her home and custody of her teenage daughter, the couple decide to embrace the change and move from Chicago to rural Maine. Unfortunately, when a brutal murder happens right next door just after they move in, the whole town starts giving the newcomers side-eye, and the terrible secrets Will and Sadie left behind all threaten to come to light. Kubica is an expert at playing with our expectations—every new conflict puts us further on edge, especially since almost no one in the Fousts’ new hometown is what they first appear to be. Her white-knuckle thriller kept us off-balance until the final twist, a shocking reveal that made us want to read the whole thing all over again.
Customer Reviews
Mehhh…
Good up until the last few chapters where the believability is questionable. Despite some believability issues, will continue to read her books.
Ending saved the book
The book was definitely a slow burn it took me longer than usual to finish, but the twist maybe made me glad I did.
Nope
Author must have been paid by the word. This could have been a tight short story. So bored that ½ way through I gave up and just read the last two chapters. Totally unbelievable ending.
