“Here’s the best news you’ve heard all year: Not a single page disappoints....The only difficulty with Truly Madly Guilty? Putting it down.” —Miami Herald
“Captivating, suspenseful…tantalizing.” —People Magazine
Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It’s just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong?
In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty turns her unique, razor-sharp eye towards three seemingly happy families.
Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit busy, life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there’s anything they can count on, it’s each other.
Clementine and Erika are each other’s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last-minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don’t hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid’s larger-than-life personalities there will be a welcome respite.
Two months later, it won’t stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can’t stop asking themselves the question: What if we hadn’t gone?
In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty takes on the foundations of our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don’t say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
One disastrous BBQ upends the lives of three suburban Sydney families. Liane Moriarty (The Husband’s Secret, Big Little Lies) has a gift for mixing high drama and biting humor—and highlighting the absurd levels of investment and stress involved in modern domesticity. There are no heroes or villains in Truly Madly Guilty. But this entertaining pageturner seeks to explore the ripple effects of trauma and how and why bad things happen to good people.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In bestseller Moriarty's (Big Little Lies) latest, one small decision going to a barbecue reverberates through the lives of the six adults. Childhood friends Erika and Clementine couldn't be more different. Obsessive-compulsive Erika is married to Oliver; both are accountants, and they have no children. Clementine is a disorganized classical cellist with a husband, Sam, and two small children, Holly and Ruby. These two families are unexpectedly invited to a barbecue at the opulent home of Erika's neighbors: wealthy and vivacious Vid; his "smoking hot" wife, Tiffany; and their 10-year-old daughter, Dakota. During what is supposed to be an ordinary afternoon of food, drink, and lively conversation among people just beginning to become friends, a harrowing event deeply affects all these characters, forcing them to closely examine their choices, not only of that day but of their entire lives, and the effects of those choices. The novel holds back the meat of the story until the reader is about to burst with curiosity, but this technique strangely doesn't feel like torture; it gives readers a chance to consider the endless possibilities of every moment.
Customer Reviews
Good drama for a slow read
Lovely story telling . I felt it was best to take a whole week to read this one (slowly) to really develop the characters In my mind.
Long
Ok story but could’ve been 300 pages shorter
It was ok, kept waiting for more though
I enjoyed the characters (although not my favorite characters of Liane Moriarty’s books), I always feel like I can relate with at least one of them. It wasn’t terrible but kind of meh. I was hoping for a happy turnaround at the end like “What Alice Forgot” but the end left me wanting more out of the story. The big event at the barbecue definitely was not what you’d expect from the buildup to it. I did appreciate the building to the actual event and then some story left after. But overall the story didn’t wow me.
