Chapters alternate between the two girls, giving us beautifully intimate windows into their shared anguish as they come to terms with their father’s secrets. Camino and Yahaira’s utterly distinct personalities and voices are illuminated by Acevedo’s brilliant writing style. Camino’s more polished words (narrated elegantly by Melania-Luisa Marte) cut straight to her sadness, while Yahaira’s rough verbal explosions (narrated by Acevedo herself) reveal her anger.
