A Tonal Path, Volume 1

A Tonal Path, Volume 1 contains 392 play-by-ear exercises designed to develop musical memory through a simple process: hear the melodic structure, know it, and play it back.

Instead of relying on the traditional intervals and arpeggios of major and minor scales, the course begins with short phrases built from small groups of tones. The modal context changes from section to section. As the book progresses through Core Levels 1–7, the phrases become longer and the relationships between tones grow more complex.

Each exercise contains fragments of melody rather than abstract patterns. The exercises are presented in standard music notation and are intended to be heard and played back from memory.
