Changing direction
Joe and Lia ‘s story begins under very intense and stressful conditions. In normal circumstances, they may never have met since she is a brilliant trauma surgeon in Atlanta and he is a roving hostage negotiator for the FBI. An armed shooter in her OR brings Joe into her orbit. Both have mastered staying calm and collected under the most stressful of conditions and both know circumstances can change in the blink of an eye. They certainly do for Lia. One minute she is a brilliant surgeon who had saved many lives, the next her career as a surgeon has ended as a bullet shatters her hand.
Three months later, Fate brings Joe and Lia together again, this time because each have a relationship with his sister Tansy. Both Lia and Tansy are brilliant thinkers who met years ago and have even invented and patented medical devices together. Tansy has invited Lia to the compound she and Joe inherited near the small town of Phail, Vermont to rest, recuperate and regroup after her life changing injury. She arrives at the nearest airport to discover Joe is her escort to the compound and that he is related to Tansy. Like Lia, Joe is at a crossroads in his career. Weary, burnt out and frustrated, he is pondering leaving the FBI and taking up residence in Phail along side his sister and the numerous friends who have also become residents on the compound. Seeing Lia again is just an added bonus and discovering that she feels the sparks and connection between them is something he wants to explore further. Their chemistry is palpable to his sister and their friends who are more than happy to see Joe take a romantic interest in someone.
It soon becomes apparent, however, that trouble has followed Lia or Joe to Phail. Joe’s protector instincts come out in full force as do those of everyone at the compound. The danger escalates as Joe and Lia become aware that they want something more than friendship, something more lasting and deeper. Is Joe or Lia the target? Will they get a chance to have a happily ever after? They will if the residents of the compound and the town of Phail have anything to do or say about it.
This book gives the reader not only an amazing romance, but also wonderful characters and some intriguing suspense. The close relationships among the friends at the sawmill compound only make this book more enjoyable. This book and the whole Small Town Heroes series are well worth reading. Enjoy!
