Publisher Description
Metaphors are more than a linguistic device, they reveal the way different cultures make sense of the world. This book challenges that popular view by highlighting examples where metaphors are not cross-linguistically intelligible even though we know speakers of the respective languages have similar views on the concepts involved. The case study of English and German, two languages with a long-standing and rich exchange of ideas, suggests that non-native speakers notice logical inconsistencies in metaphors that native speakers are unaware of.
