For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway is novel that tells that story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to a republican guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War.  Jordan is assigned to use dynamite to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia.
