Publisher Description
Kauai Companion is first and foremost a travel guide for the island of Kauai. It covers the Garden Isle, as well as the four smaller islands; Molokai, Lanai, Niihau and Kahoolawe. Come with the author on a road trip, around the entire island, stopping at all the major towns and villages, and pointing out in detail, over 90 points of interest and attractions as we go along. Directions to all attractions include an address, mile marker and specific instructions on how to get there. There are over 80 color pictures of the key attractions, plus any local tips to make each attraction more enjoyable.
The book will explore in depth, the natural wonders and attractions that uniquely define this island paradise. The Na Pali Coast, one of the three most picturesque coastlines in the world, and Waimea Canyon, that Mark Twain called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Take the Koloa Heritage Trail to Poipu Beach, one of the top ten beaches in the world, or hike the Kalalau Trail, considered by some, as one of the top three hiking trails in the world. There will also be plenty of time to stop at some of the best botanical gardens and beaches you will find anywhere. Kauai is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, no wonder more Hollywood movies have been shot here, than anywhere else.
Find out the best way to get around. When to use public transportation, rent a car or a scooter, take a tour. Island hop on a regional airline to one of the smaller islands like Molokai or Lanai, for a day trip, where you can visit the world’s tallest sea cliffs at Kalaupapa, or see the incredibly unique Garden of the Gods (Keahiakawelo) on Lanai.

The Garden Island
I had a lot of fun reading this handy guide to the lush “Garden Island”. Mike packs a TON of information into 178 pages - it’s like having a well-traveled friend sit you down and tell you about all the hidden gems other travel guides don’t include. If you’re a fan of volcanoes (like me!) then you’ll love reading about the great Mauna Loa, or the majestic Mauna Kea (did you know that if measured if from base to peak, it’s actually TALLER than Mt. Everest?!). I love the fun facts dotted throughout the book! Whether you’re headed to Hawaii for a more active adventure or if you’re just planning to get away from it all, “Kauai Companion” will be a perfect addition to your suitcase.
The Kalalau Trail
My brother and I love to hike and even though we have both been to Kauai separately we have never done this hike. The book does an excellent job of describing what is considered one of the three top rated hikes in the world. The book has opened up a lot of possibilites for us and as soon as the pandemic eases we would like to try this 11 mile hike along the Na Pali Coast.
Our Favorite Hawaiian Island
We love Kauai and have been there several times. We usually stay in the Princeville area and never really thought of seeing much more of the island until we read the book. There is so much more to see that we have missed that we can’t wait to go again.
