Publisher Description

Oahu Companion is first and foremost a travel guide for the island of Oahu. It covers The Gathering Place, as well as the four smaller islands; Molokai, Lanai, Niihau and Kahoolawe. Come with the author on a road trip around the entire island, stopping at all the major towns and villages, and pointing out in detail, over 80 points of interest and attractions as we go along. Directions to all attractions include an address, mile marker and specific instructions on how to get there. There are over 70 color pictures of the key attractions, plus any local tips to make each attraction more enjoyable.

Visit the world-famous Waikiki Beach, and the world-class shops in Waikiki. Climb up Diamond Head for a great view of Honolulu, and spend a day at the Pearl Harbor National Monument. See beautiful botanical gardens, and stop at beaches where you can share the sun with large green sea turtles. Steep yourself in history at the Polynesian Village, and snorkel in Hanauma Bay, where there are over 400 species of fish. Oahu is a small island, but there is a lot to do and see on it.

Find out the best way to get around. When to use public transportation, rent a car, a scooter or take a tour. Island hop on a regional airline to one of the smaller islands like Molokai or Lanai, for a day trip, where you can visit the world’s tallest sea cliffs at Kalaupapa, or see the incredibly unique Garden of the Gods (Keahiakawelo) on Lanai.

Wow!

WOW! I had no idea that my favourite flower, the Hibiscus, was chosen as Hawaii’s offical flower in 1923! Mike’s Oahu Companion is filled with interesting tidbits that animate what could’ve been just another travel guide. Did you know that the Hawaiian hoary bat is the only land mammal native to Hawaii that is not extinct? Or that shaved ice was introduced to Hawaii by Japanese plantation workers? I didn’t! Now I’m ready to dig into a dish of soursop shaved ice and head to to the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens! Aloha!

More than a beach

My wife and I have always visited Maui in the past, but since reading these Companion books we have decided to make Oahu our next stop, then Kauai and then the Big Island. It is amazing how much there is to see in Hawaii. These books have been a great eye opener.

Wonderful Waikiki

We love Oahu and Waikiki/Honolulu is one of our favorite places. Since our travel plans have been impeded by the pandemic this year we bought this book and were surprised to see how much we have been missing. If you can not travel, a travel book with great color pictures is the next best thing. As soon as we can we will be heading back to Oahu. This is a great little book.
