Bell, influential pastor of Mars Hill Bible Church and author of Velvet Elvis, aims to provide an introduction to some of the big questions of Jesus' life and message. Claiming that some versions of Jesus should be rejected, particularly those used to intimidate and inspire fear or hatred, Bell persuasively interprets the Bible as a message of love and redemption. He is clearly well-versed in the scriptures, and for support his arguments look to everything from the parable of the prodigal son to Revelation to the story of Moses, in addition to his own personal experiences as a pastor, many of which are the book's highlights. Bell's vision of Christianity is inclusive, as he argues against some traditional ideas--for instance, hell as eternal punishment reserved for non-Christians--in favor of a God whose love and forgiveness is all encompassing. His style is characteristically concise and oral, his tone passionate and unabashedly positive. The result is a book that, while not exploring its own ideas deeply, may be a friendly welcome to Christianity for seekers, since they don't have a dog in the fight over hell that this book has ignited among the professionally religious.

Thanks for jumping out on the limb Rob, and daring to wrap words around what you suspect may be true. By this time you have been sufficiently maligned by the "band of older brothers" who could never imagine just how amazing God's grace might actually be. Courageous … GREAT news. A story that we can tell passionately.

It's about time!
A book like this is long overdue. Rob tackles questions about the Christian faith head on. I'll be reading this one again, even slower than the first time, to really let the content sink in.

People REALLY should read this book prior to commenting and comment on what it actually says and not just on what they think it says. It's a book about asking questions, some of those questions which have often been taboo. It explores the wide path of historical understanding of the issues rather than just parrotting the popular contempory views. It isn't intended to form a "new theology" but to open up a conversation which may cause us to question things that are long overdue a reconsideration. And his writing style is unique...it may not appeal to all, but it is how he communicates, and it effectively gets his thoughts accross. Truth isn't so fragile that it can't stand a 2nd look to question if we are sure that we know what we think we know. If there is a God in heaven, I hardly think he is shaking in his robes now that this book is available on iTunes (or in the bookstore for that matter), but may actually be relieved that finally SOMEBODY is questioning some of the assumptions that have taken on a type of dogma that does not reflect his actual character. And if this book is just another "fad" book, it will pass into obscurity like so many others. If it contains truth we need to examine, let's pray that it gets a decent hearing. And it is a great read.
