When war came to the Shenandoah Valley, Matt Slaughter and his older brother, Owen, joined the Confederate army. But three years defending his homeland as a sniper has weighed heavily on Matt’s conscience. With the cause lost, the brothers desert—only to find upon their arrival home that Owen’s farm has fallen into the hands of swindlers.
When Owen accidentally kills a Union officer, Matt takes the blame. But now—facing a sham trial and a noose—he escapes to the west, where he saves the life of another fugitive down-and-outer. Both men are a breed apart from other outlaws. Neither kills for pleasure or steals for profit. But that doesn’t matter to the cold-blooded men who are going to give them hell to pay—and get the same in return....
Customer Reviews
Matt Slaughter, confederate outlaw / hero.
This book starts out pretty good, with Matt and Owen fighting the Civil War. They desert the Confederate Army, and come home to the Shenandoah valley in Virginia, and time to find out that their farm has been sold to swindlers, annoying Levi Owen, Matt's older brother's wife. She just wanted food for her children, but in the end, their farm got sold and possessed by this evil swindler. Owen and Matt go to this judge, to hopefully reverse this issue, but in the end it's all for nothing. In a flash, Owen gets angry and starts fighting this judge, leading to this judge is death by the hands of this pistol witch accidentally fired, which was close to where they were fighting. Matt takes the blame, and gets arrested, and sent to jail in this feed store. Matt cleverly escapes, that scene was epic. Chapter 3 with the turkey shoot was pretty good, with Matt winning this Henry repeating rifle from this outlaw called Tyler. The action sequences in this book are intense and amazing, five entire chapters had action, mixed with adventure. Matt is naïve at first, until he meets his partner Ike. This is the book that all Western fans should read.
