Publisher Description

Abstract. The complexity of Colombia's armed conflict constantly confounds both national and international observers. The main purpose of this article is to make the complex Colombian scenario understandable for those unfamiliar with it. The first section presents a description of Colombia's current armed confrontation as the result of a protracted, predominantly political, conflict. The second characterizes its protagonists as multiple, fragmented, and increasingly autonomous vis-a-vis their potential social bases. The third part focuses on the piecemeal, staggered negotiations that have taken place over the last two decades. The article closes by briefly pointing to the most significant changes introduced by the current administration, headed by President Alvaro Uribe Velez, since August 2002. Resumen.
