Publisher Description
This is a story about a fellow called Richard Rubbins. It's a tale of trying to do things right, sometimes succeeding, most often not. The setting is in England just before WW II; the ending is a few years after WW II. But where to start? … Richard is a living soul, and although bodies suddenly appear, individuals don't — they sort of bubble out of a curious blend of family heritage and Divine Destiny. So, to explain why Richard is the way he is, the story starts before he was born in the heavens. That's the time and place where worldly stuff is determined anyway. Very quickly, a child is conceived on earth and, soon after, he is born. Times are tough ... guns loom across the English Channel and warplanes drone in the air. While Satan's passions challenge God's mercy, the boy becomes the eyes and mind of the reader as he and his family face and survive the troubles of the times. Disorder in the world outside builds imagination within. Reality and make-believe swim together, almost hand in hand, as the boy copes with turmoil at home and aggression from abroad.
