Recommend for a manual for those who have experienced abuse
This book tackles the difficult topic of domestic abuse and creates it as a textbook example of what is possible. It’s a very difficult topic, but the angle she takes it from makes it more palatable. I can’t say enough about how the author captures emotions and that it all ends in the most ideal way. With that being said, I was tempted to pack it in within the first few chapters and I’m glad I pressed through the many typos early on that were a distraction, which when I took the time to figure out the correction, took me out of the story. I have noticed that this author can struggle with build-up to set up a story. For instance, the hero’s sister bought a lottery ticket for him and within the page he had won billions. There was no suspense and no real appreciation for the enormity of that. In saying that, there was therefore nothing in that which had built the character up to be more relatable or deserving - a hook to make you want to continue. Her book-writing format seems to be to start off by making her characters’ circumstances as bleak and then quickly jump in to build the story, making the characters not entirely likeable or relatable which, in turn, takes away from the platform of the story where you are hooked into wanting to continue. My suggestion would be to illustrate the characters’ thoughts and feelings and include more winning attributes and background. Something more than sadness and hopelessness. As I said, however, she more than makes up for it as the story continues. A solid 3.5 out of 5.

Unfortunately I was unable to finish it due to the lack of proofreading. The steady stream of errors was too distracting. Might have been a good book otherwise.
