Publisher Description

The twentieth century war between science and religion created a dilemma for modern Christians; many felt they had to “choose sides” in the argument. Either you stood by the Bible and distrusted science, or you espoused modern scientific ideas and probably concluded that we live in a godless, random, capricious universe. But that choice, science or religion, is artificial and unnecessary.

It is the first book to show many ways in which science can make plausible seemingly incredible stories in the Bible, right down to the physics of it!

Chapter One focuses on miraculous events recorded in the Bible-the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, plagues of the Exodus, and the parting of the Red Sea --to name just a few. In the last decades of the 20th century, ground penetrating radar and a greatly increased understanding of geological phenomena caused a resurgence of scholarly interest in the Bible’s account of these events. In chapter one I include many excerpts from articles written by prominent scientists about these subjects. Biblical accounts of miraculous events are quoted and referenced--book, chapter and verse. The quote is followed by information about recent archaeological discoveries and theories, as well as applicable scientific data, including some unconventional, little known theories.

Chapter Two focuses on three unconventional scientific theories: Dr. Joseph Dillow’s theory that the antediluvian Earth had an atmospheric vapor canopy, Dr. Charles Hapgood’s theories about crustal shift (also called polar wandering), and Dr. Immanuel Velicovsky’s controversial theories which suggest that, at the time of the Exodus, Earth had a “close call” (near miss) with a large celestial body. This chapter introduces the reader to these theories, and discusses their implications with regard to some biblical stories generally regarded as too fantastic to be accounts of real events.

Chapter Three is about more conventional science. It talks about the formation of the universe, our solar system, and the Earth and its creatures. It also begins to make a case, at the atomic level, for the possible physics of miracles. It particularly focuses on the four basic forces of nature, a phenomenon called “phase entanglement”, and the continuing separation of the dimensions, all of which play an important role in my ideas about the physics of miracles. “Though we have accepted the notion that space isn’t flat, but rather curved and warped by masses (like stars and planets), we still haven’t accepted the idea that time isn’t flat and uniform either!” (from chapter three p.57).

Building on this idea, Chapter Four focuses on the relativity of time. With the help of a couple of Einstein’s “thought experiments” about relativity, and citing evidence, like the fact that in the last fifteen years only a few leap seconds have been added to our atomic clocks, (prior to 1998 one was added every other year), I proceed to build a case for the idea that we actually live in a collapsing field (rather than an expanding universe). This has a direct bearing on the plausibility of some of the miracles of Christ.

In Chapter Five, I start with the assumption that the New Testament miracles of Jesus did really happen. My ideas about the possible physics of these miracles draw upon the model of space and time presented in chapters three and four, but the focus shifts from “micro” to “macro” as I explore “phase entanglement” in terms of dimensions. I apply the scientific concepts from the previous chapters directly to specific New Testament miracles of Christ. I also include some ideas from different cultures which shed additional light on the subject.

In the Appendices, there are Scientific, Historical, and Cultural perspectives that expand on the topics discussed.
