APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The Hunt for Red October stands at the highest summit of the techno-thriller genre. Tom Clancy’s mechanical know-how and relatable characters made his debut an instant Cold War classic when it was published in 1984—and they’re why the book holds up decades later. In this code-orange game of Battleship, everyman CIA agent Jack Ryan hitches a ride on a state-of-the-art American sub to search for a defecting Soviet captain. John Krasinski brings the action hero’s uncanny instincts and unflappable calm to life in TV’s Jack Ryan series, but this tightly-plotted thrill ride remains the best place to get to know the character.
Rattling good tale! Excellent and compulsive read, hard to put down.
Red October is Clancy's first, and in my opinion, still his best. If all you know is the Alec Baldwin movie, you are missing out. While the movie was also great, the book, as you might expect, offers so much more. And unlike some of Clancy's larger and more complex novels, Red October has nearly no lulls in the action. I have read it five or six times and it seems to get better each time.
