To Have and Have Not
This depression era novel, written in 1937, was very engaging, and I think foreshadowed Hemingway’s ultimate demise. Knowing the history of his life, it showed me that he was a very troubled man as he wrote this book, in fact he very clearly drew out the differences between the “haves” and “have nots”. He also brought up the topic of suicide and failed relationships, particularly near the end of the novel, which also lent credence to his state of mind. Timeless and poignant, this novel is for everyone.
