A woman who pens relationship advice could sure use some herself in this smart, down-to-earth comedy-drama from superstar novelist Jojo Moyes. Author Lila Kennedy’s new book about keeping your marriage together was published two weeks after her husband left her. Lila is already stressed as she raises two daughters—a moody teen and a rambunctious eight-year-old—and tolerates her fussy widowed stepfather. As she struggles as a single parent, she gets an unexpected visit from her biological father, whose career as a TV actor has fallen into a slump and who needs a place to crash while pretending he’s still hip and successful. Moyes finds plenty of humour in this awkward family’s misadventures without shortchanging their feelings, and the result is clever, funny, and full of heart. Anybody who’s had to start over in life will laugh and cry along.
