THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
A haunted past. A train with no stops. Thirteen hours to reckon with the truth.
In 1954, Anna Matheson boards a luxury overnight train bound for Chicago that she’s commissioned, along with a list of names and a heart hardened by loss. Twelve years earlier, during the height of World War II, six people shattered her family’s life. Now, under a false guise, Anna has orchestrated a chilling reunion—trapping each of them aboard.
Her plan is precise: confront the ghosts of her past, unearth long-buried truths, and ensure justice is waiting at journey’s end. But when one of the passengers is found murdered before dawn, it becomes clear that Anna isn't the only one harboring secrets—or seeking revenge.
As the train hurtles into the icy night, Anna must navigate layers of deception, reckon with the cost of vengeance, and come to protect the very people she came to condemn. Because someone on board is determined that none of them—Anna included—reach the final stop alive.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
A woman’s plan to avenge her family goes dangerously awry in this suspenseful, fast-moving mystery. In 1954—twelve years after the terrible deaths of her family members—Anna Matheson has finally wrangled the six people she holds responsible onto a single luxury train car. During the long ride ahead, she plans to get them all to confess. But when one of them is murdered, the smart and savvy Anna realizes someone on board has their own agenda, threatening her plans…and maybe even her life. Thriller author Riley Sager brilliantly reimagines the classic locked-room train mystery here, beginning with his tough-as-nails protagonist. Anna doesn’t start off as a detective in the story, but we loved the way she rises to the challenge. And Sager doesn’t make it easy for her, as interconnected storylines and stunning twists crank up the suspense. Through it all, there’s a moody sense of atmosphere straight out of a gritty noir. Awash in deceit and double crosses, With a Vengeance is a ride you’ll truly never forget.
