OLEAN -- I have noticed, in my seventh decade on this struggling planet, that springtime--in addition to bringing promise and hope-strangely is the time of year when "little" things irk and weary me beyond all reason. Oh, I'm not talking about the perennial April chore of filling out state and federal tax forms that appear to have been designed by trained gibbons (this year New York state, for unexplained reasons, won't accept your clear and efficient employer-provided W-2 forms--you have to spend lots of time laboriously copying the exact same figures box-for-box on a similar state-designed form). Sure, taxes are an aggravating pain, but at least you can anticipate them.
