"'When was the last time you sang?' she asked gently. Kataryn whispered, 'Not since that day,' and Contessa felt her heart break."

The day the war began was the day General Kataryn lost everything and everyone she loved the most. Barbarians flowed over the border and onto her estate, killing all in their paths. And barbarians died before they could get truly into the Civilized Lands, died at Kataryn's whims. But stopping the invaders cost her a part of her soul, and she was left hollow and shattered.

Contessa called for the most able healers to tend the damaged general, and Cheonsa heard the call. When he arrived at the estate of his childhood friend, he was shocked to see her faded and defeated. Now, he's determined to remind Kataryn of the song they sang as youths.

Now, he's determined to show her life is still worth living.
