Doug the Snail

Doug the Snail by Steven Michael Lamb is a playful children’s book about a character named Doug who loses his shell! When Doug awakes in the morning, he realizes his shell is missing and embarks on an adventure to find it. Along the way, he meets new, exciting animal friends including a Newt, an Owl, a Frog and a group of other snails. The snails help him realize that he doesn’t need a shell after all because he is in fact a slug, not a snail!

This humorous book has short, accessible text which makes it perfect for young readers aged 4-6. The word choice is sure to help broaden the understanding and reading ability of young readers, whilst well placed use of repetition helps to consolidate new terminology and encourage a love of words. In addition, comprehension questions and additional activities can be found at the end of the book which enrich the overall reading experience and bring the story off the pages into real-life.

As a picture book this is also a win, with bright colors and a combination of real photos and classic illustrations, children are sure to both relate and find inspiration to develop their own creative skills. Variations in typeface size help to create an even more pleasing and engaging aesthetic. There is plenty in this book to enjoy, for adults and children.
