Since 1993, Wayne B. Sorensen, PhD, FACHE, has been associate professor at Texas State University-San Marcos, and until 2003, he was the chair of and associate professor in the Department of Health and Administration at the university. For almost three decades, he served in the United States Army, filling various healthcare administration positions across the United States and abroad. His military service began in 1965 at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, where he served as a personnel management officer and unit commander at Lovel General Hospital. From 1966 to 1967, he was an administrator for the Provincial Health Assistance Team in Pleiku, Vietnam. From 1967 to 1971, he was a personnel counselor in the Army Medical Department in Los Angeles, and from 1972 to 1974, he was a health benefits manager in the Surgeon General's Office in Washington, DC. Until 1975, he was the executive officer for the 11th Evacuation Hospital in Pusan, Korea. Afterward, he served as assistant executive officer at the Silas B. Hayes Hospital in Monterey, California. Dr. Sorensen's final position in the Army, from 1989 to 1992, was as chief healthcare administrator/executive officer in the Directorate of Clinical Services, 7th Medical Command, in Heidelberg, Germany. An affiliate of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) since 1985, Dr. Sorensen has served the association in multiple ways: He was a member of the Journal of Healthcare Management editorial board, a member of the Regents Advisory Council, and the president of the Central Texas Chapter. Currently, he serves on the AUPHA/HAP Editorial Board for Undergraduate Studies. In addition to being a Fellow of ACHE, he is a member of the AcademyHealth, the American Association of the Advancement of Science, the American Hospital Association, and the Texas Hospital Association. During his illustrious career, Dr. Sorensen has received numerous honors, including the 2008 ACHE Gold Medal Award and the 2004 Presidential Assignment Award at Texas State University. He earned his master's degree in healthcare administration from Baylor University and his doctoral degree in hospital and health administration from the University of Iowa.
