Planetary surveys carry an inherent risk of life, limb, and profits. Rocky knew that well from experience. Which told him that this particular planet sat right at the edge of profitability, if not danger. Orbiting a red dwarf star, it sits at the margins—on one side possible colonization and a lucrative planetary license. On the other, a designation of ‘research interest only’ and a planetary license that might not pay even the fuel cost.

On top of that, he has the minder assigned by Planetary Surveys—a bot named Popcorn. Too cheerful and too willing to doom Rocky’s future in the pursuit of an objective and complete evaluation.
