Henry David Thoreau was an American writer, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, essayist, and poet. A leading transcendentalist, he believed in social equality, spiritual self-improvement, closeness to nature and freedom from material interests. 

While Henry David Thoreau lived the majority of his life in Concord, he travelled to a few other States including New York and Maine, which inspired many essays and “The Maine Woods”. It is one of the earliest and most detailed accounts of the process of change in the American hinterland.
