Emma is an intelligent and beautiful Scarlet Macaw and is more than just a pet to Barbara. The bird is a constant companion and source of comfort for a woman who lives alone. She is also a fine judge of character and a great alarm system, warning Barbara of strangers and intruders upon the property. When threatening notes and phone calls start to harass Barbara and her friend, Inspector Max Fenton soon has a demanding and intriguing case on his hands.
