INTRODUCTION Fundamental and applied research in biomaterials and medical devices carried out by The State Center for Blood Compatible Biomaterials at The Research Institute of Transplantology and Artificial Organs, Moscow, Russia falls in three main areas: the scientific basis for determining biological properties of biomaterials and medical devices; advanced technologies providing improved blood compatibility of biomaterials and medical devices; safety testing of biomaterials and medical devices for contact with blood [1-3].
