The Morgesons

“That child,” says Aunt Mercy, “is possessed”—and Cassandra Morgeson is halfway up a chest of drawers, risking a fall to reach a book about the far North. When her mother calls her stories unprofitable, Cassandra has an answer of her own.

Elizabeth Stoddard’s 1862 novel opens in Surrey, a New England village between quiet fields and a rugged Atlantic coast. Ten-year-old Cassandra lives among kin whose habits and pieties seem as fixed as the names on their family gravestones, but her restless curiosity keeps carrying her beyond the lessons meant to confine her. The sea offers a glimpse of wildness; the household offers rules, sermons, and watchful eyes. As Cassandra grows, can she claim a life shaped by her own hunger to know and feel?
