On the eve of his historic moonshot, Pete Moore takes his wife Glory to a shabby carnival attraction called "Ride the Rocket," where glitter, noise, and papier-mâché planets eerily echo the grand mission awaiting him. Glory sees only wonder and certainty in his future, but Pete is unsettled by the ride's cheap imitation of the cosmos and by the uneasy sense that something essential has been reduced to a joke.
