Tydore's Gift

On a dying Mars of red hills, frozen canals, and lonely tower-dwellers, Earth spy Marley climbs toward the tower of the enigmatic Martian Tydore, sent to steal a rebuilt atomic weapon that could decide a war on Earth. Impatient and contemptuous of Martian subtlety, Marley sees the world around him as decadent and weak, while Tydore greets him with exquisite courtesy and a calm that seems almost passive. Yet beneath the polite ritual, each man silently measures the other: Marley despises Mars's refinement, while Tydore appears to regard Earth's history of force and destruction with cold understanding. When Marley finally shatters a priceless goblet and demands the weapon, Tydore yields without resistance, leading him to the case where the deadly gun awaits. Marley claims it in triumph—only to hear Tydore's final revelation that the weapon was made specifically for him, turning victory into a possible trap and ending the encounter on a note of chilling irony.
