School children on both sides of the 49th parallel learn about the War of 1812 and, although they are covering the same events, the lessons they learn couldn't be more different. Each side has its heroes. The American 10-year-old reads about and admires the principled and stoic President James Madison who suffered the indignity of having his mansion set aflame by the British. For the Canadian children, the part of the hero is played by Major-General Sir Isaac Brock who died at Queeston Heights shortly after being shot in the heart by a sharpshooter.
