Dolly Parton’s wonderful audiobook definitely lives up to her motto “Leave no rhinestone unturned.” Parton’s insightful memoir gives us the real stories behind decades of smart, beautiful, intriguing song lyrics. She dives deep into the ideas and writing process that inspired many of her classics, from the touching childhood songs she wrote about a corncob doll to deeply personal songs that have never been heard before by the public. (Turns out Jolene was a bank teller who was getting a little too flirty with Dolly’s husband, Carl.) We just can’t overstate the sheer joy of diving into Dolly’s glittery world. And, alternating between her own narration and clips from her songs, this treasure of an audiobook is a wonderfully immersive experience.
