What’s the best way to stir up trouble for an already dysfunctional family? Throw a lucrative, contentious will into the equation. Samantha Downing—whose staggeringly addictive thriller My Lovely Wife had so many people reeling—uses this delicious set-up for this beautifully unsettling novel. We join Beth Morgan, older brother Eddie and younger sister Portia on a hellacious US road trip, as per the instructions left in their grandfather’s will. The estranged siblings must mirror a doomed trip taken by their parents and grandfather some 20 years prior to claim their juicy slice of inheritance pie, but naturally: it’ll be no simple drive down memory lane. Downing takes great pleasure in presenting her evocative, ghoulish Americana and the devilish characters her backstabbing leads must negotiate. Her wonderfully plotted book throws up questions around family bonds and pressures, and allows us to draw our own conclusions.

Brilliant
Absolutely loved it! Interesting, unusual and I did not see the end coming. I love the way there are no goodies or baddies - everyone’s dysfunctional. Leaves you free to pick your own character to root for - probably based on your own unfortunate character flaws or those of your nearest and dearests 😄
