This is Michael Krupa’s story of how in 1939 he escaped the German invasion of Poland only to be captured by the Red Army, accused of espionage, and interrogated in the notorious Lubianka prison. He was then sent to the infamous Pechora Gulag, where most inmates died of overwork and starvation within a year. Amazingly, Kupra then escaped and made the gruelling journey from Siberia to Afghanistan.
This is a remarkable true story of survival and also gives a chilling insight into the brutality of Stalinist Russia. It reads like a thriller and is in the mould of Defiance, and Touching the Void in tales of human survival and endeavour against the odds.

A Gripping True-Life Thriller!
Very well written account of an extraordinary story. An 'edge of the seat' thriller, which is gripping and sometimes horrific, but is an amazing 'story' based on true events. One of the best audiobooks I have ever purchased and highly recommended!

I used every spare moment to listen to it, even when I had put the Kettle on whilst doing other things;Headphones plugged in!

Poignant, shocking & Inspirational.
A stark reminder of the horrors of WW2 and particularly the inhumane treatment of POWs in Russia. We've heard the stories before but this account really brings home the barbaric suffering and injustice they faced. It's a truly inspirational story that shows how courage and faith can go a long way when it's all you have. I can't praise this book enough.
