This wonderful historical fiction story is set mainly in 1953 Somerset, with references to the war but not in gory detail. It also explores themes of loss and grief.
The story centres around three very different women: Stella, Clementine and Elizabeth.
Stella, a strong and determined woman, comes to Somerset seeking a better life. She finds work in an art shop and her life takes a turn when she meets Edwin. Despite their initial resistance, their relationship develops. When tragedy strikes, Stella soon discovers that a part of Edwin has been left behind.
Clementine meets Archie Arbutus and they have an instant connection when he introduces her to his family she overhears a conversation she would rather not have heard. This incident sets her life on a new course. Later, she has a chance meeting on a train.
Elizabeth Arbutus, the matriarch of the family, is grieving the loss of her eldest son Edwin alongside her husband Michael. Feeling the distance grief has created between them, Elizabeth makes a mistake that further complicates their lives.
As secrets unfold and life takes unexpected turns, everyone’s lives are changed.
