'ONE OF THE GREATEST AMERICAN NOVELS EVER WRITTEN'
'Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.'
A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man falsely charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming-of-age story, an anti-racist novel, a historical drama of the Great Depression and a sublime example of the Southern writing tradition.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Harper Lee's thoughtful story of an explosive scandal in small-town Alabama has been an American classic since it came out at the dawn of the Civil Rights era—and its message of compassion feels just as vital today. Sissy Spacek narrates Scout Finch's coming-of-age discovery of racial injustice, loss and compassion in a clear, soothing Southern accent. Spacek’s acting talents bring to life Scout's wide-eyed honesty and her father Atticus' clear-eyed wisdom, while also emphasising Lee's sly humour.

Excellent
This is the best audio book I've encountered with Sissy Spacek a superb choice of reader. She makes capturing at once Scout's mature writing voice and child's outkook seem easy. She creates flawless and subtle changes of register for each character's speaking voice, and enhances the cadence of Harper Lee's beautiful narrative. I have listened to this many times and always learned something new. It is well worth the price. I will treasure this recording for years to come: an instant classic reading of a brilliant novel.
