Publisher Description
A futuristic thriller from the bestselling author of Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Gabrielle Zevin. The first in a young adult trilogy, as the teenage daughter of a mafia boss seeks to leave the underworld behind – and look after what remains of her family . . .
New York City, 2083. Chocolate and coffee are now illegal. Paper is hard to find, and the city is rife with crime and poverty. And yet for Anya, the sixteen year-old daughter of the city's most notorious (and dead) crime boss, life is fairly routine. She goes to school, avoids falling in love with the District Attorney's son, and avoids her loser ex-boyfriend.
That is, until her ex is poisoned – by a chocolate bar that her family manufactures. One that she gave him. And the police think she's to blame.
Suddenly, Anya's life is quickly unravelling. Thrust into the spotlight and with suspicions growing inside her family business, Anya must clear her name and save her family – before it's too late.
All These Things I've Done is the first in the Birthright series. Continue the story with Because It Is My Blood and In the Age of Love and Chocolate.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In this first installment of the Birthright series, Zevin (Elsewhere) paints a disturbing picture of a not-so-distant future, when the economy has shrunk along with natural resources, and precious luxury items like chocolate, coffee, and newly manufactured clothing are banned in the United States. In crime-ridden New York City, 16-year-old Anya Balanchine, the orphaned daughter of a renowned black-market chocolatier boss, has more than her share of responsibilities, trying to keep her siblings safe and care for her ailing grandmother. When she is wrongly accused of poisoning her ex-boyfriend with tainted chocolate produced by her father's company, Anya faces one of the most difficult trials of her life. To complicate matters, she is falling in love with the wrong boy, Win, the son of a prominent prosecutor in the DA's office. Anya must decide between following her heart or fulfilling her duties as new head of the family. Offering the excitement of a crime drama and the allure of forbidden romance, this introduction to a reluctant Godfather-in-the making will pique the interest of dystopia-hungry readers.
