It's Hollywood in the 80s. A screenwriter and his girl-friend Sharon, an actress, watch a 1940s movie. The screenwriter, Greg, experiences intense emotion when he sees the main actress in the film, Brooke Ashley, and this baffles him.
Gregory, who has just been nominated for an Oscar, meets with is agent and sells him the idea of writing first a novel based on Brooke Ashley's life, and then write a film script. Gregory starts researching the life of Brooke and becomes obsessed with her, which complicates his relationship with Sharon.
Gregory finds out that Brooke Ashley died in a fire, but that the causes of the fire were unknown.
As he looks into her mysterious death, strange things start happening to him. His house is ransacked, he gets warning messages telling him to quit his research on Brooke. He doesn't know who's threatening him. But he feels that Brooke is now part of his life, and for reasons he doesn't quite understand, he feels there is no turning back: He has to continue his search in spite of the danger. Then he discovers something that will change his life forever.
