Expurgated and condensed
This appears to be an expurgated and heavily condensed version. Compare chapter 1 of this with that of the full version (obtainable on Gutenberg, the version subtitled “A Ladies’ Man”), and the difference is quite astounding. And it is the same throughout. Having started the book in this version, I had to re-read it from the beginning in the real version to avoid missing most of the detail. Do not read this, it will give you an entirely false impression of the book.
